How the bac average is calculated
The baccalaureate average calculation in Morocco rests on three components of unequal weight:

The formula is therefore:
General average = (continuous assessment × 0.25) + (regional × 0.25) + (national × 0.50)
A concrete example: a student with 14.50 in continuous assessment, 12.75 in the regional and 13.20 in the national gets (14.50 × 0.25) + (12.75 × 0.25) + (13.20 × 0.50) = 3.625 + 3.1875 + 6.60 = 13.41, a fairly good grade.
Grades, from pass to excellent

An important point: the grade is not the entry criterion. Regulated-access institutions calculate their own selection average, with coefficients on specific subjects.
Three worked examples
Case 1: strong continuous assessment, weak national
Continuous assessment 16.00 · regional 15.00 · national 10.00
(16.00 × 0.25) + (15.00 × 0.25) + (10.00 × 0.50) = 4.00 + 3.75 + 5.00 = 12.75
Result: 12.75, fairly good. Despite excellent marks across two years, the national exam pulled the average down by more than three points. This is the most common case.
Case 2: the reverse — a strong national rescues the year
Continuous assessment 11.00 · regional 10.50 · national 16.00
(11.00 × 0.25) + (10.50 × 0.25) + (16.00 × 0.50) = 2.75 + 2.625 + 8.00 = 13.375
Result: 13.38. An average student across two years lifted above 13 by the national exam.
Case 3: balance
Continuous assessment 13.50 · regional 13.00 · national 13.50
(13.50 × 0.25) + (13.00 × 0.25) + (13.50 × 0.50) = 3.375 + 3.25 + 6.75 = 13.375
Result: 13.38, identical to case 2 with completely different marks. The average does not tell the story, it gives a number.
Coefficients: why the same mark is not worth the same
Within each component, subjects do not weigh equally. Every subject carries a coefficient set by stream, and that coefficient determines its real weight.
The general logic: the defining subjects of a stream carry the highest coefficients. In science streams, mathematics, physics and life and earth sciences dominate. In humanities streams, Arabic, philosophy and social studies. In economics streams, economics, mathematics and accounting.
Official coefficients are published in each stream's reference framework and can change. The only safe rule: consult your stream's framework for the current year.
Common calculation mistakes
- Adding the three marks and dividing by three: completely wrong. The weights are unequal — the national counts double
- Confusing general average with selection average: each institution has its own formula
- Ignoring coefficients in continuous assessment: a plain average of subjects gives a wrong figure
- Trusting unofficial apps: many use an outdated or incorrect formula
- Calculating before all marks are out: one missing mark changes the whole result
The golden rule: any average calculation you do yourself is an estimate. The only official figure appears on the grade report in Massar Moutamadris after validation.
The calculation as a decision tool
The real value of the bac average calculation is not knowing the number — it is knowing where to work. Try this:
- Calculate your current average from the marks you have
- Recalculate adding one point to the national
- Recalculate adding one point to continuous assessment
- Compare the difference
You will find something important: one point gained in the national exam adds 0.50 to the general average, while the same point in continuous assessment adds only 0.25. An hour revising for the national is therefore worth two hours preparing a class test.
That does not mean neglecting continuous assessment — it builds the base and reduces pressure. But in the final weeks before the national, the priority is mathematically clear.

Is continuous assessment calculated with coefficients?
Yes. Semester average = sum (each subject's mark × its coefficient) ÷ sum of coefficients. A low mark in a high-coefficient subject therefore weighs far more.
